In connection with the UNESCO goal of Climate Action, senior art students at Sa-Hali Secondary focused their creativity on the many ways climate change is impacting our experiences in Kamloops, BC and within the wider Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc region. They identified their concerns with local forest fires, dramatic weather changes, the loss of animal habitat and the decline of pollinators. To gain insight into the many ways citizens can have a positive impact on climate change, staff from the City of Kamloops, spoke to the students about the 8 Big Moves identified in the Kamloops' Community Climate Action Plan. Students then painted images to share their personal messages of concern and hope for the future. Their image concepts touch on ideas of reducing emissions, saving energy at home, recycling and composting, building community gardens, and planning for greener infrastructure in the future. Students learned how their arrangement of imagery and choice of colours can convey powerful messages. Finally, these students wrote artist statements to accompany their art. The paintings were finished in time for Earth Day, April 22nd and have been showcased on the Sa-Hali Art website, http://sahaliart.weebly.com/student-art.html
