Submitted by: Tiina Kukkonen

Location: Kingston, Ontario, Canada

Affilitation: Assistant Professor, Visual Arts Education, Queen's University

Drawing on the concept of the dinner table as a place to gather and share ideas, teacher candidates in the course CURR 679 (Intermediate/Senior Visual Arts) created this interactive installation to explore critical issues through visual art. Each place setting at the table represents one critical topic or issue that teacher candidates (working in groups of 2-3) chose to "bring to the table" of contemporary intermediate/senior level arts education. Topics included:

  • Smartphone use

  • Indigenous food sovereignty

  • Reproductive justice

  • Food insecurity

  • Eating disorders and mental health

  • Climate change

  • Integrating diverse artists and perspectives

Each group also designed a learning guide or presentation to accompany their place setting, which included key information about their topic and activities/prompts to incite audience engagement.
